Looking for a fun and easy DIY project to spruce up your summer wardrobe? Try adding length with lace to any basic t-shirt for a stylish and sophisticated twist! If you are using a sewing machine, you can expect to spend about ten minutes on the project; if you’re hand-stitching, allow about thirty minutes.
To begin, select enough lace to match the circumference of the hemline of your top, plus about 4″. You will want to add a little extra if the lace has large designs so you’ll be able to match the pattern on the sides. The lace also has to be wide enough for the extra length you’ll need to add to your top, plus an extra 1″ or 1-1/2″.
Next, pin the lace under the hem of the shirt, just over the double top-stitching of the hem. Leave an extra 1″ on each side. Follow the pattern of the lace to cut each end. Overlap the extra 1″ on the sides, then pin and sew!
Finally, sew over the top-stitching on the front and the back, leaving about 1/2″ near the unsewn sides. You can also use fray check on the trimming of the lace to be sure that it won’t unravel.
Not only is adding lace great for shirts, but you can also use it for skirts, dresses, shorts, and pants!
