Have you ever thrown away perfectly good apparel, accessories, or toys because the zipper broke? If you’re like most people, the answer is probably yes. It can be very frustrating when a zipper on your favorite jacket, pants, or purse finally gives in and breaks. Such a tiny problem can seemingly ruin a great item.
Whether the zipper slider is broken, the pull broke, the teeth won’t close, or it’s just plain stuck check out the following suggestions for how to fix broken zippers before you throw it away!
THE ZIPPER IS STUCK:
When sliding the zipper up and down it feels like it keeps getting stuck. A quick solution is to rub a graphite pencil on the teeth. This should solve the problem. If for some reason it doesn’t, try to lubricate the zipper with Windex, bar soap, or lip balm.
THE TEETH KEEP POPPING OPEN:
Check that an obstruction isn’t in the way (like a string or thread). Then check the teeth to see if any of them are sticking out. If they are, use pliers to bend them back into the correct position. If that doesn’t work either, then check the slider. Sometimes sliders become worn down and you might need to replace them.
THE SLIDER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED:
If you need to do this for the above reason, or maybe the slider just came completely off, then don’t worry because it’s a relatively simple fix. First use some pliers to pull the old slider off completely. Pick up a new slider and slide it into position. This should only take a few minutes!
THE ZIPPER WON’T STAY UP:
This one might not be a problem stemming from the zipper itself, unfortunately. Sometimes clothing won’t fit quite the way it needs to anymore, but you can do one little trick to keep the zipper up. Slide a key ring onto the end of the zipper, and loop the ring over the pants button. For a more long term fix, you will need to replace the zipper completely.
